Hydrogen Cars How Close Are They Really

Work is being done on the development of affordable hydrogen cars and it is being met with some success. Even the oil companies are getting in on the action so this surly means hydrogen may be the wave of the future. Royal Dutch Shell has a hydrogen subsidiary.

Honda is leasing the FCX Clarity to a limited number of people and Toyota has the HCHV-adv in the works. This car will get 516 miles on one tank of hydrogen.

Later this year they plan on leasing them in Japan. The Toyota uses a nickel metal hydride battery as opposed to the lithium ion batteries that other manufacturers are using. Even though these cars will be on the road by the end of the year, they cost of the batteries is large so more research will have to be done to find ways to make them more affordable.

Meanwhile the biggest hurdle of all is developing the infrastructure needed to fuel the potential millions of hydrogen fueled cars that could be on the road someday. The National Hydrogen Association says that 70 percent of all Americans could be put within 2 miles of a hydrogen fueling station for about $10 to $15 billion. That’s half the cost of the Trans Alaska Pipeline System (in today’s dollars) and about what we’re spending each month in Iraq. Shell says it’s more like 20 billion.

Anything that presents a “healthier” alternative to burning gas, and relieve some of the crunch we’re feeling on our wallets from oil is a great thing.

I really hope that out government wakes up and invests in something smart like this. They waste so much money as it is and they can’t even spend some money on try to remove our dependency on oil. It probably has more to do with the oil companies deep in the government pockets.
